The Story Behind Gun Hill Signal Station

Back in the early 1800s, long before phones or Wi-Fi, Barbados had its own clever way of staying connected. The British military built a line of signal stations across the island, using flags by day and lanterns by night to pass messages from one end of Barbados to the other.

Gun Hill, built in 1818, was the main hub that kept the others in touch. The hill got its name from the cannons once stationed there, which were used to send alerts across the island. Thankfully, those days are long gone, and now Gun Hill’s only “signals” are the friendly waves from visitors enjoying the view.
