Barbados is full of surprises. Sure, the beaches and cocktails are what draw most people in, but tucked away in the island’s lush green countryside is something truly special: St. Nicholas Abbey. This isn’t your average historic house, it’s part time capsule, part rum distillery, and part scenic adventure. If you’re staying at Sandals Barbados or Sandals Royal Barbados, it makes for the perfect little day trip when you’re ready to trade the sand for sugarcane fields (at least for a few hours).

The Story Behind St. Nicholas Abbey

Built back in 1658, St. Nicholas Abbey is one of the oldest great houses in the Americas, and one of only three Jacobean-style mansions left in the Western Hemisphere. Over the centuries, it’s seen plantation life, sugarcane production, and the ups and downs of history. Today, thanks to some serious love and care from the Warren family, it’s been restored into a place where old-world charm and modern-day rum-making go hand-in-hand. You’ll feel the history as soon as you walk through the doors.
